This rare vintage kokeshi is a refined work by MURAKAMI Kenichi (1929–1991), a celebrated artist whose pieces have become increasingly sought after since his passing.
Hajirai, meaning ‘shyness’, evokes the traditional idea of gentle, reserved femininity; its shy gesture, with the arm partially lifted to the face, suggesting modesty and quiet emotion.
The silhouette is beautifully stylized and tapered, giving the figure a sense of lift and grace. Completely undecorated, the focus rests on form, balance, and the natural beauty of the wood. The long sleeve and high chignon are defined through delicate pyrography, engraved by hand with red-hot iron tools. Her expression is modest yet charming, imbued with the softness and mystery characteristic of Murakami’s work.
Murakami, born in Yamagata City in 1929, was known for elegant, minimalist designs and won numerous awards, including the prestigious Japanese Prime Minister’s Award. Hajirai is a beautifully distilled example of his artistry and a meaningful piece for collectors.

・ Avoid direct sunlight
Display indoors away from direct sunlight to prevent sunburn and fading. Even if you avoid direct sunlight, the color may gradually fade on some kokeshi depending on the amount of light and aging.
・ Do not leave in high temperature humidity
Avoid displaying it near heat sources or in humid places as it may cause discoloration, mold and cracks.
・ Do not get wet
Avoid washing or wiping kokeshi dolls with water. The paint may peel off, discolor, or crack the wood as it dries.
・ Gently wipe off dust
Remove dust by stroking it with a soft, dry cloth. Do not rub it strongly or wipe it with a wet cloth as it may cause scratches or discoloration.
