Haregi (晴着, “Formal Dress”) is a beautifully refined kokeshi by the artist Norio (憲雄), created in celebration of the elegance and joyful spirit of traditional Japanese ceremonial attire. This large, graceful doll wears a formal kimono associated with auspicious occasions, new beginnings, and festive gatherings.
The artist’s craftsmanship is immediately evident in the soft, rounded form and the meticulous hand-painted detailing. The kimono’s patterns – applied with confident strokes – evoke the richness of celebratory textiles, with balanced colours and harmonious motifs that speak to the tradition of haregi as garments of beauty and meaning.
Norio’s work is recognised for its warmth, thoughtful shaping, and expressive simplicity, and Haregi reflects all of these qualities. Its elegant dongo-like silhouette, refined facial expression, and festive thematic elements hint at the possibility of collaborative creation, where multiple artisans contribute to the final design. This approach is not uncommon for this style of kokeshi and adds a sense of shared artistry and emotional depth, echoing the communal spirit of special occasions.
A quietly cheerful piece, Haregi dhowcases the grace of traditional celebration and the artistry of Japanese craft.

・ Avoid direct sunlight
Display indoors away from direct sunlight to prevent sunburn and fading. Even if you avoid direct sunlight, the color may gradually fade on some kokeshi depending on the amount of light and aging.
・ Do not leave in high temperature humidity
Avoid displaying it near heat sources or in humid places as it may cause discoloration, mold and cracks.
・ Do not get wet
Avoid washing or wiping kokeshi dolls with water. The paint may peel off, discolor, or crack the wood as it dries.
・ Gently wipe off dust
Remove dust by stroking it with a soft, dry cloth. Do not rub it strongly or wipe it with a wet cloth as it may cause scratches or discoloration.
