This enchanting vintage kokeshi by the esteemed artist Kisaku is a delightful example of traditional craftsmanship, distinguished by its intricate, hand-carved pyrography. Using red-hot iron tips, the artist engraved the kimono with remarkable precision; the subtle variations in line – shaped through changes in angle, pressure, and tool – create a richly textured surface that feels both tactile and visually warm.
The young woman is portrayed with a sweet, spontaneous, and cheerful presence. Her half-closed eyes and open, genuine smile give her an immediate charm, while the full, rounded body and shaped lower form add to her expressive silhouette. The voluminous okappa (おかっぱ) bob – typical of Japanese schoolgirls – frames her face in the iconic style. At the neckline, the crisp white juban peeks through, offering a refined contrast to the sunset red of her outer garment.
This kokeshi carries the artist’s signature on its underside. As a vintage piece, it remains in very good condition, retaining both its warmth and its character.
A wonderfully expressive and joy-filled work, showcasing Kisaku’s mastery of form, line, and traditional engraving techniques.

・ Avoid direct sunlight
Display indoors away from direct sunlight to prevent sunburn and fading. Even if you avoid direct sunlight, the color may gradually fade on some kokeshi depending on the amount of light and aging.
・ Do not leave in high temperature humidity
Avoid displaying it near heat sources or in humid places as it may cause discoloration, mold and cracks.
・ Do not get wet
Avoid washing or wiping kokeshi dolls with water. The paint may peel off, discolor, or crack the wood as it dries.
・ Gently wipe off dust
Remove dust by stroking it with a soft, dry cloth. Do not rub it strongly or wipe it with a wet cloth as it may cause scratches or discoloration.
