A rare and exquisite sōsaku kokeshi by the celebrated artist Suigai Sato (1920–), renowned for his extraordinary contributions to the world of kokeshi. This piece, titled “Suigetsu” (meaning “Emerald Moon”) evokes the beauty of summer landscapes, with moonlight shimmering on lush green leaves and tranquil waters.

The doll’s sweet, joyful facial expression is accentuated by large, luminous eyes, long lashes, and an open red smile. Her straight blonde bob, crowned with a large red bow, adds charm and playful elegance. The base bears the artist’s stamp, confirming authenticity.

This kokeshi is distinguished by the delicate rural and mountain landscapes depicted on both sleeves, contrasting with the light, natural color of the wood. Handwritten verses complete the scene: the right sleeve reads,

“Two people side by side hunting for wild fern shoots,”

referencing a traditional springtime activity of gathering edible ferns in rural mountainous areas. The other sleeve depicts Haruna-san, a famous volcanic mountain in Gunma Prefecture known for its lake and natural scenery, alongside Ikaho Onsen, a historic hot spring resort at the foot of Mount Haruna, famed for its waters and long stone staircase. These dolls were created as artistic souvenirs by hot spring resorts between the 1950s and 1980s and signed by recognized, award-winning artists.

A true collector’s treasure, this kokeshi reflects Suigai Sato’s mastery. A poetic, joyful, and deeply historically significant work for discerning collectors.

  • ・ Avoid direct sunlight

Display indoors away from direct sunlight to prevent sunburn and fading. Even if you avoid direct sunlight, the color may gradually fade on some kokeshi depending on the amount of light and aging.

・ Do not leave in high temperature humidity

Avoid displaying it near heat sources or in humid places as it may cause discoloration, mold and cracks.

    ・ Do not get wet

Avoid washing or wiping kokeshi dolls with water. The paint may peel off, discolor, or crack the wood as it dries.

    ・ Gently wipe off dust

Remove dust by stroking it with a soft, dry cloth. Do not rub it strongly or wipe it with a wet cloth as it may cause scratches or discoloration.
